Care of Your Writing Insrument

How to Care for Your Writing Instrument

Your writing instrument has been crafted from the finest materials available and, with reasonable care, should last a lifetime.  Reasonable care means following a few common sense guidelines.

  1. Care of Your Writing InstrumentRemember to keep the cap on the barrel whenever you are not using your pen as air tends to dry out the ink prematurely. This especially applies to fountain pens.  However, rollerball owners should also pay attention to this guideline.  Ballpoint pens are not as susceptible to dry ink.

  2. Avoid dropping your writing instrument—especially on a hard surface.  The barrel of your writing instrument is sheathed in a coating of cyanoacrylate to protect it from scratches.  However, accidents do happen.

If the barrel of your writing instrument should get scratched chances are that I can repair it with another coat of cyanoacrylate.  This re-coating applies to only the material used to clad the barrel and not the metal parts. Just return your writing instrument to me and I will do my utmost to restore it to its original beauty.

  3. Clean your writing instrument with a soft polishing cloth if it gets soiled. NEVER use solvent-based cleaning solutions as they can dissolve the cyanoacrylate barrier and leave your writing instrument susceptible to scratches and dings in the finish.

  4. Water is your writing instrument’s worst enemy. Keep it protected from moisture.  Never leave it in a puddle of water and, if it accidentally gets wet, dry it thoroughly.  Be sure to take it apart and dry the mechanism as best as you can to prevent rust.  If the barrel of your pen is made wood you don’t want it to warp or crack due to moisture.

  5. Avoid leaving your writing instrument in extremes of high heat and humidity such as car interiors during the summer months.  High heat has been known to cause wood to split/crack and acrylics to melt—not to mention drying out the ink supply prematurely.

  6. Do not leave your pen in direct sunlight.  The sun’s untraviolet rays can fade or change the color of some woods.
